2.0 AUSTRALIA AS A PREFERRED SOURCE OF BIOMEDICAL COLLAGEN |
|
| Collagen is probably the most abundant protein
in the animal world. Its unique physical and chemical structures impart an
array of properties including flexibility, elasticity and tensile
strength. This diversity of function is evidenced by the vast number of
structures into which it is incorporated in the mammalian body - skin,
bone, tendon, cartilage, blood vessels, digestive tract, cornea, to name a
few.
One of the prime sources of a uniform supply of collagen is the skin, and cattle hides provide the volumes and high quality needed to fulfil the demands of medical applications and the food industry. |

Australia is one of the world's leading beef cattle producers, with approximately 24 million head. As well as supplying the domestic market, Australia's beef producers export both live animals and meat products to dozens of countries and every continent. Our export-approved abattoirs, licensed by the Federal Government's Department of Primary Industries & Energy and monitored by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, process these cattle to the highest standards. Pre - and post-mortem veterinary examination of animals, structured surveillance programmes, tagging systems to identify the origin of each animal, and strict quarantine regulations, all contribute to making Australia one of the safest sources for healthy, disease-free cattle in the world. |
| In 1997, the Australian Government introduced a
legislative ban on the feeding of specified mammalian material to
ruminants. On August 1st 2000, the EC listed Australia, along with
only a handful of other countries, as having a Level 1 (most favourable)
rating with respect to the BSE status of the national herd. In
addition, surveillance and monitoring is conducted according to the
recommendations of the Office International des Epizooties.
Documentation can be provided attesting to the absence of the following diseases: Through the National Vendor Declaration programme, documentation can also be provided if necessary, attesting to freedom from hormonal growth promotants (HGP's) and contamination with endosulfans. |
